Confidence Limits and Their Robustness
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract Confidence limits are common place in physics analysis. Great care must be taken in their calculation and use, especially in cases of limited statistics when often one-sided limits are quoted. In order to estimate the stability of the confidence levels to addition of more data and/or change of cuts, we argue that the variance of their sampling distributions be calculated in addition to the limit itself. The square root of the variance of their sampling distribution can be thought of as a statistical error on the limit. We thus introduce the concept of statistical errors of confidence limits and argue that not only should limits be calculated but also their errors in order to represent the results of the analysis to the fullest. We show that comparison of two different limits from two different experiments becomes easier when their errors are also quoted. Use of errors of confidence limits will lead to abatement of the debate on which method is best suited to calculate confidence limits.

Evaluation of distribution-free confidence limits for enzyme kinetic parameters.
Monte Carlo experiments have been used to test the robustness of distribution-free confidence limits for the parameters of the MichaelisMenten equation (Porter & Trager, 1977). When used in conjunction with the modified form of the direct linear plot (Cornish-Bowden & Eisenthal, 1978), they prove to be more robust than least-squares confidence limits. In circumstances where the least-squares as...
متن کاملRobust Optimal Desirability Approach for Multiple Responses Optimization with Multiple Productions Scenarios
An optimal desirability function method is proposed to optimize multiple responses in multiple production scenarios, simultaneously. In dynamic environments, changes in production requirements in each condition create different production scenarios. Therefore, in multiple production scenarios like producing in several production lines with different technologies in a factory, various fitted r...

Background: Heart patients with hypertension and myocardial infarction and hemodialysis patients are at risk of lowering of blood pressure during hemodialysis. Therefore, continuous monitoring of blood pressure in health centers is a priority for deciding the type of therapeutic treatment in these patients. The aim of this study was to provide a decision-making model based on neural network and...
متن کاملRobustness of Wilks’ Conservative Estimate of Confidence Intervals
The striking generality and simplicity of Wilks’ method has made it popular for quantifying modeling uncertainty. A conservative estimate of the confidence interval is obtained from a very limited set of randomly drawn model sample values, with probability set by the assigned so-called stability. In contrast, the reproducibility of the estimated limits, or robustness, is beyond our control as i...
متن کاملResampling Tests for Meta-analysis of Ecological Data
Meta-analysis is a statistical technique that allows one to combine the results from multiple studies to glean inferences on the overall importance of various phenomena. This method can prove to be more informative than common ‘‘vote counting,’’ in which the number of significant results is compared to the number with nonsignificant results to determine whether the phenomenon of interest is glo...
